Changes in the physiological behaviour of animals exposed to a polluted medium are a good criterium for the grade of the water. The following categories can be distinguished: (a) the limit of lethality, (b) the disturbance limit, (c) the tolerance limit. The disturbance limit is especially important for critical examination, as it separates the biologically normal responses from the pathological ones. The following methods can be used in order to find out to which category the fish belongs: studies of metabolism, responses to stimuli, investigations of the blood status, determinations of potassium and sodium contents in serum and in the total organism, measurement of electrical resistance of fishes and of their gut temperature, and histological examinations. Research has been carried out by these methods with regard to the amount of damages caused by the mixed waste water of a chemical factory. The waste water was tested in fresh, brackish and sea-water. The results showed how much poisonous water could be added to the pure water without injury to the animals living in it.
