In recent years, fishery products obtained in the river Elbe decreased considerably. The main reasons for this rapid decline are the extension of tributaries and the levelling of low tide regulations of the river. The extension of the river destroyed and eliminated many spawning places of gravel-spawning fish. Also the loss of tributaries creeks and sluices, which represented the normal habitats for Elbe fish, resulted in a tremendous reduction in fish yield. Another obstacle for ascending fish (i. e. sturgeon, salmon, eel) are man-made barriers in the Elbe and its tributaries. The foremost cause for the decrease in production, of course, is sewage pollution. Aside from other detrimental effects it strongly influences the taste of the fish flesh. The degree of taste interference depends greatly on the flow of water.
