Research on the use of punctuation has been thoroughly neglected by modem linguists. It is no wonder, then, that the role of punctuation in oral reading of texts has also been neglected by both linguists and psychologists. Empirical research on the topic is hardly existent, much less systematic or in any way integrated with theories of speech production. O'Connell and Kowal (1985) provide a literature review on punctuation and its relationship to pausing. One reason for the neglect is clearly theoretical.
