International audienceDistributed, event-driven applications that processsensitive user data and involve multiple organisational domains mustcomply with complex security requirements. Ideally, developers want toexpress security policy for such applications in data-centric terms,controlling the flow of information throughout the system. Currentmiddleware does not support the specification of such end-to-endsecurity policy and lacks uniform mechanisms for enforcement. Wedescribe DEFCon-Policy, a middleware that enforces security policy inmulti-domain, event-driven applications. Event flow policy is expressedin a high-level language that specifies permitted flows betweendistributed software components. The middleware limits the interactionof components based on the policy and the data that components haveobserved. It achieves this by labelling data and assigning privileges tocomponents. We evaluate DEFCon-Policy in a realistic medical scenarioand demonstrate that it can provide global security guarantees withoutburdening application developers
