In order to exist in an increasingly competitive global marketplace, it is important for corporations to forecast the evolutionary direction of new prod- ucts rapidly and effectively. Most products in the world are developed based on the design of existing products. In the product design, capturing functional re- quirements is a key step. Function is continuously evolving, which is driven by the evolution of needs and technologies. So the functional requirements of new product can be forecasted based on the functions of existing product. Eight laws of function evolution are put forward in this paper. The process model of cap- turing the functional requirements of new product based on function evolution is proposed. An example illustrates the design process.
