We present observational evidence for the link between variability of theradio emission of the relativistic jet and optical continuum emission in theradio galaxy 3C 390.3 which indicates that the source of variable non-thermalcontinuum radiation is located in the innermost part of the relativistic jet.We suggest that the continuum emission from the jet ionizes material in asubrelativistic outflow surrounding the jet, which results in a formation of aconical region with broad emission lines at a distance of about 0.4 parsecsfrom the central nucleus.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the proceedings of  "Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology - Einstein's Legacy" meeting,  November 7-11, 2005, Munich, Germany, edited by B.
