Spectrum analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) is used as an evaluation method for autonomic nervous system function. In the spectrum analysis of HRV, the components from about 0.04 Hz to 0.15 Hz, called the low-frequency (LF) components, and the components from 0.15 Hz to 0.5 Hz synchronized to the respiration frequency, called the high-frequency (HF) components, are considered interesting.Those two components are interpreted as reflecting the activities of the autonomic nervous system. It is anticipated that the activities of the autonomic nervous system may be modified by exercise or may exhibit discontinuous changes. In such cases, conventional spectrum analysis is not suffi cient to derive information concerning the activities of the autonomic nervous system. This paper presents a method in which the time variations of the amplitudes and the frequencies of the LF and HF components are estimated.
