Electronic-mail-distributed conferences (e-conferences)* are established to fulfill perceived needs for scholarly and professional information sharing between scholars. Scholar is used as a common term for the Library and Information Science professionals, researchers, and instructors observed in this study. Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language (2nd College Edition) defines “scholar” as a “ 1. a) learned person b) a specialist in a particular branch of knowledge” as in the field of Library and Information Science. “Scholarly” is defined as “ 1. of or characteristic of scholars 2. having or showing knowledge, accuracy and critical ability 3. devoted to learning; studious.” Many e-conferences are established to serve scholarly communication purposes in the topic area to which they are devoted. Anecdotal evidence that scholarly and professional information needs are being met by e-conferences abounds. Okerson ( 199 1) finds that:
