s published by IFI/Plenum Data Company. All three databases are available from the Dialog Information Retrieval Service. All three databases feature record structures with a “descriptor” field. The focus of this experiment was on the effectiveness of descriptors for information retrieval. The subjects of this experiment attempted to match bibliographic records with subject descriptors. Accordingly, I gathered the candidate bibliographic records in a manner blind to their subject content. The first step was isolating records generated The ERIC version of the target records was prepared for the computer interface display by reducing it to the title and abstract fields. Examples of these records as they appeared in the computer interface are listed in the following sections of this article and in Figure 1. Displaying the truncated ERIC record represents an arbitrary choice of one of several experimental designs. For example, alternative experimental designs could have displayed only the truncated LISA record, only the truncated ISA record or some mix of record versions. My inspection of the target record triplets revealed that the titles of the articles did not vary, but that there was some variation in the wording of the abstracts. The variation in the abstracts did not seem to be systematic; many of the abstracts were very close in length and wording. The choice to display the truncated ERIC record was merely a convenience. Nevertheless, if this study were to report a powerful effect of the Strategy of Unlimited Aliasing, these alternative designs would be potential avenues for other research efforts.
