The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), which produces citation databases, identifies research fronts (RFs), or areas of active current investigation, for inclusion in the SCISEARCH database. The particular RF selected arbitrarily for use in this investigation is 86-3363, which has five component phrases: “Expert systems; children’s knowledge; mathematical intuition; learning mathematics; mentally retarded children.” According to the DIALOG Chronolog (1988), SCISEARCH Files 34,433, and 434 include RFs in bibliographic records for 1983 and forward. If a RF containing a particular term is desired, the Basic Index can be accessed on that term using the /RF suffix. Articles in a particular RF can be retrieved by a search on the RF number. A general idea of the complex process of establishing the RFs, explained in detail by Garfield, Kimberley, and Pendlebury (1988), is that data files of the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) covering a single year are combined and sorted for works cited above a certain threshold. Then, pairs of articles which have been cocited, or cited together in an article, are grouped into clusters, or RFs. Each cluster is assigned a number and given a name constructed according to an algorithm that identifies frequently occurring phrases in titles of the RF cluster papers. After a RF has been identified and named, each article subsequently added to the SCISEARCH database is linked to that RF if the article has at least one cited reference from the RF cluster.
