French environmental laws require industrialists to include probabilitycriteria in risk assessments, especially to define confidence levels for riskmanagement measures. This paper presents the failure probabilities as efficientindicators for technical safety barrier performances. Generic formulas areproposed to evaluate these probabilities, including failure rate, barrierarchitecture, full and partial proof tests. In many cases, these results can bedirectly used to assess safety barrier confidence levels.
