By using a very simple and general model to describe the dynamics of diskgalaxies, we estimate the $\lambda$ spin parameter for a sample of observedgalaxies and present a study in which we show that several important physicalproperties are intrinsically related to the dynamics of the systems. Althoughcorrelations between average metallicity with magnitude or Hubble type areevident, we obtain equally strong correlations with the spin parameter, wheregalaxies with low $\lambda $ values present higher abundances and galaxies withhigh $\lambda$ values are poor in metals. Also, the gas content of the galaxiescorrelates with $\lambda$, with high $\lambda$ systems showing higher gas massfractions than low $\lambda$ galaxies, highlighting the important role thisparameter plays in the structure of disk galaxies and the proposal of $\lambda$as a robust and objective physical measure of galactic morphology.
