We propose a novel mechanism for photogeneration of multiexcitons by singlephotons (carrier multiplication) in semiconductor nanocrystals. In thismechanism, the Coulomb interaction between two valence-band electrons involvingtheir transfer to the conduction band creates a virtual biexciton from vacuumthat is then converted into a real biexciton by photon absorption on anintraband optical transition. This mechanism is inactive in bulk semiconductorsas momentum conservation suppresses intraband absorption. However, it becomeshighly efficient in zero-dimensional nanocrystals and can provide a significantcontribution to carrier multiplication in these materials.
