Invitation to join the collaboration around Zendy
Zendy aims to provide individuals with the easiest possible access to relevant and trusted academic literature, and make access to paid content affordable.
All content will be freely searchable on Zendy. Individuals will need to log in to download Open Access (OA) full text material, and need to have a subscription to Zendy Premium to be able to download paid content.
A specific need we want to address through Zendy is to support all those individuals, especially in developing countries, that work at organisations that cannot afford the relatively expensive institutional subscriptions. Through Zendy, these individuals get an affordable alternative to expensive pay-per-download options, or illegal (e.g. Sci-Hub) or impractical ways (e.g. trying to get the paper directly from the author).
Publishers can join Zendy to make their content more easily discoverable and get revenue from individuals that subscribe to Zendy Premium. The model is a shared revenue model based on usage of the paid content. Publishers can use their existing distribution mechanisms (e.g. SFTP) to ensure no additional work is needed. Publishers can also choose to join Zendy Premium with all content and for all countries, or select to exclude any desired content or countries if preferred. The latter ensures that the publisher has no risk of losing institutional subscriptions, and only gains an upside potential through a new revenue stream from countries where the publisher currently has no (significant) revenue.
