This article discusses the situation of creating a home in a nursing home. Based
on fi eldwork on the transition of elderly people into nursing care, it is argued that
home for the elderly people is in a process of dissolution years before the actual
move into a apartment at the nursing home. In this respect the apartment at the
nursing home is even less a home compared to their previous one, and it will not
substitute as a home, due to the residents’ incapacity as well as to the practices
of the institution into which they have moved.
