The State of Montana dedicates sizeable portions of its annual budget to collect, analyze, and store water quality data. This information resource is used by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to decide (1) whether water bodies support their beneficial uses, (2) if discharges are in compliance with permits, (3) whether water quality is improving or declining, and (4) what the causes and sources of impairment of water bodies are. At present this information is neither readily available nor easily accessible for many prospective end users. But this resource has tremendous potential and value for citizen‐based groups working to restore and maintain water quality.
