When Journal AWWA editor‐in‐chief Mike McGuire (and incidentally, my former boss) contacted me about writing a column for the Journal he asked, “As a water utility manager, what keeps you awake at night?” My mind immediately spun up like a natural gas‐fired turbine on a hot summer afternoon. What doesn't keep me and thousands of other water utility superintendents, directors, and general managers awake at night? Whether your utility serves 5,000 or 500,000 customers, there is nearly an endless list of challenges facing you and the rest of us on an almost daily basis ‐ all of them covered in the pages of the journal you're currently holding in your hands (or, for the technically sophisticated among you, reading on your computer or tablet screen).
