The Process of Democratization of the Access to Higher Education and the Relevance of PIBID within the Context of Chemistry Education Degree Students at UFRPE in Serra Talhada - Pernambuco

Deep thoughts have been given to the topic of the expansion of universities towards the countryside. This paper aims at investigating the process of democratization of the access to higher education and the relevance of the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teacher Initiation (PIBID) within the context of chemistry teaching degree at UFRPE in Serra Talhada-Pernambuco, and its likely influence on students’ expectations about their future. The data were collected using an individual questionnaire. The results indicate that the expansion project, with its many openings for entering college life, and the consolidation of implementation of public policies for populations historically excluded from the educational system has made the access to higher education more democratic. This happens because without the expansion project, many students currently in college would not have been there. Besides that, the expansion proposal seems to contribute somehow in altering the reality of many youths, who can now go to college, and get qualifications, allowing them to join the market in the future. Entering college represents for many students a change in the way they see life, and this by itself reveals the importance of the expansion of the university system. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.20130017Muito se tem refletido a respeito da expansão universitária no sentido de interiorizar o ensino superior. Neste trabalho, objetivamos investigar o processo de democratização do acesso ao ensino superior e a importância do Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação à Docência (PIBID) no contexto dos alunos do curso de Licenciatura em Química da UFRPE em Serra Talhada – Pernambuco e sua influência nas expectativas de futuro desses discentes. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da aplicação de questionário individual. Os resultados revelaram que a ampliação da oferta de vagas e consolidação das políticas públicas voltadas às populações historicamente excluídas do sistema educacional tem democratizado o acesso ao ensino superior, pois fora do projeto de expansão, muitos dos estudantes que hoje estão na universidade não teriam essa oportunidade. Além disso, a proposta da expansão parece contribuir para mudar um pouco a realidade de muitos jovens, agora com a oportunidade de cursar o ensino superior, de modo a se qualificarem melhor, para serem provavelmente inseridos no mercado de trabalho. O ingresso na universidade representa para estes estudantes, mudanças em suas perspectivas de vida, revelando a importância da expansão do sistema universitário. DOI: 10.5935/1984-6835.2013001
