In 1965 a questionnaire was sent to all hospitals with obstetric beds in New South Wales to determine the incidence of cæsarean section for the years 1963 and 1964. This study was extended later to cover the years 1965, 1966 and 1967. The results of the survey for 1966–1967 were reported in The Medical Journal of Australia on February 15, 1969. In order to bring these figures up to date, a further survey was carried out for the years 1968 and 1969. Of 194 hospitals circularized, returns were received from 151, 78% approximately. The returns received cover nearly 93% of the total confinements for the State in the two‐year period and so form a reasonably accurate picture of the present situation in New South Wales. Table 1 gives the overall picture of the results.
