This paper summarizes what was presented as a coference in the I Simposium of Contrastive Linguistics and Text Genres. It is pointed out that Contrastive Linguistics appears in 1945, gets stronger in the 50s, falls into crises in the 80s, but recovers its strength and it is used in order to strengthen the process of foreign languages teaching and learning. O presente texto reflete o que foi apresentado, em forma de conferência, no I Simpósio de Lingüística Contrastiva e Gêneros textuais. Evidencia que a Lingüística Contrastiva surge em 1945, consolida-se na década de 50, entra em crise nos anos 80, mas recupera sua força, voltando a ser empregada com vistas a potencializar o processo de ensino/aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras
