Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder in which the body is not able to produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH),which is necessary to control the levels of calcium and phosphate ions. Decreased levels of PTH lead to low levels of calcium and high levels of phosphate in the blood. Calcium is important electrolyte for muscle contractions and release of messengers from the nerves cells, so people with hypocalcemia experience seizures, which involve large amounts of activity in both muscles and nerves.
