In this essay I propose to analyze two fundamental positions that have recently emerged in the philosophical debate in relation to the experience of pain: the reductionist one peculiar to the neurocognitive area, and the phenomenological one. The comparison is conducted in the light of the notion of representation, in order to show that the reductionist perspective fails to give a satisfactory account of the properly experiential aspect of pain, which instead the phenomenological approach is able to grasp more adequately.
