This special issue of Near Surface Geophysics provides an overview on the current state-of-the-art in geoelectrical monitoring. It summarizes the results of the most recent developments in data acquisition, modelling and inversion, and illustrates the broad variety of applications through a range of case studies. The collection of papers is based on papers given at the ‘1st International Workshop on Geoelectrical Monitoring’, organized by the Geological Survey of Austria in December 2011, which was attended by scientists from 18 different countries. A selection of 12 papers has been accepted for final publication in this special issue. \u
