/short description
The decade of 1990's was a time of great development of tourism in Ecuador – during this period tourism has become a key part of the economy. Following this, the Ministry of Tourism was created in 1992. The most important is a very big influx of foreigner tourists - in 1996 Ecuador was visited by half a million tourists. This great number was the result of varied attractions being available, from beach resorts to natural parks and countryside. Skoczek suggests that the rise in the number of visitors comes especially from the interest in the latter. She describes the development of ecotourism in Ecuador and its influence on rural communities.
