In the modern economy, despite the fact that the term “small business” has become widespread in the literature and regulatory legal acts, there is still no consensus on the definition of its essence. The number of interpretations is difficult to classify in detail. The reasons for this are seen in the different scientific foundations of interpretations, their own displacement of new interpretations in the light of parallel scientific directions. Particular attention is paid to the consideration of the most significant factors of the macroenvironment. The author analyzed the terminology: “small business”, “small business”, “microbusiness”, “individual entrepreneurship. A model of the influence of environmental factors on the activities of a small business entity has been developed.
