In the Middle Ages, cities of a certain importance used to organize a ceremony called «joyous entry » to welcome the rulers passing within their walls. This celebration was some kind of festival, mixing different types of art and media. Analyzing it clearly reveals the cultural trends of the time as well as the nature of the – sometimes conflictual – relationship between the prince and the city.
