Unsolved Mysteries of History: Why did the Reverend Nikon not Immediately Become of St. Sergius of Radonezh as Hegumen of the Trinity Monastery

Годы игуменства преподобного Никона Радонежского - период становления величайшей русской обители, сыгравшей огромную роль в истории нашего отечества, которая как в период становления и возвышения Московского государства, так и в последующие столетия оказала глубокое влияние на культурную, религиозную жизнь русского народа, его национальное самосознание. Личность преподобного игумена Никона и спустя шесть столетий привлекает внимание не только богомольцев - почитателей святого чудотворца, но и исследователей своей ролью в сохранении Троицкого монастыря и создания хозяйственной основы для его дальнейшего развития на рубеже XIV-XV вв. В статье рассмотрен до сих пор не получивший освещения в исторической науке вопрос о том, почему назначенный самим преподобным Сергием своим преемником, преподобный Никон в 1392 г. отрекается от поста игумена и на шесть лет уходит в затвор. Рассмотрены также обстоятельства его возвращения в 1398 г. Наиболее вероятно, что отстранение преподобного Никона связано с начавшейся в XIV в. борьбой двух складывающихся течений (в дальнейшем получивших название иосифлян и нестяжателей) в Русской Церкви. При этом решающую роль в отречении преподобного от игуменства в 1392 г., на наш взгляд, сыграл племянник преподобного Сергия Радонежского, ростовский святитель архиепископ Феодор.
