The material comprised 56 stillborn fetuses from the Central Hospital of Tampere, during the period from January 1, 1968, to December 31, 1969. It was shown that maternal causes (27% of the total), and causes derived from the placenta (42% of the total), were the most significant findings in elucidating the causes of intrauterine deaths.
