Summary: "The lance of snake bird", mythical origin of Xylopia brasilienis (Annonaceae), a version of guaranis Ava Chiripa from Misiones (Argentina). A Guaraní tale on the origin of the Xylopia brasiliensis tree is documented and translated. The meaningful attributes that seem to have inspired the myth are associated with the figure of a bird that hunts snakes and also with the possible use of the stems of this tree as harpoon shafts or lances by the ancient guarani peoples.Key words: Mythography, ethnobotany, native tree, harris hawk, stole.Resumen: Se transcribe y traduce un relato guaraní sobre el origen del árbol Xylopia brasiliensis. Los atributos sugerentes involucrados en el mito están asociados a la figura de ciertas aves ofiófagas y al probable empleo de los fustes de dicho árbol como astiles de arpones o de lanzas por parte de los antiguos guaraníes.Palabras clave: Mitografía, etnobotánica, árbol nativo, gavilán mixto, estola.
