Summary The results of the flavonoid analysis of thirty representatives of the Hamamelidaceae, Myrothamnaceae, Platanaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Eupteleaceae, and Eucommiaceae are compared with the corresponding morphological, anatomical, caryological and palynological data. The study reveals the homogeneity of the group Hamamelidaceae‐Myrothamnaceae‐Platanaceae and its undeniable affinities with the Saxifragaceae. The Eupteleaceae and the Eucommiaceae do not belong to this group; the Cercidiphyllaceae, although close to the Magnoliales, have certain morphological and biochemical features in common with the Hamamelidaceae.
