This study aimed to identify the level of stress in prison officers. It is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. We collected data through the Lipp's Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults. Fifty-two prison officers, 45 men, and 7 women, in a prison of the interior of Minas Gerais, participated in the study. In the data analysis, we observed that 46.2% of the participants had a stress level and 53.8% did not. Among the participants who had a stress level, 52.2% were in the Resistance phase, 41.6% were in the Exhaustion phase and 4.2% were in the Alert phase. We observed a significant level of stress in the Resistance and Exhaustion phase. Strategies to improve working conditions and prevent stress must be established and we highlight the importance of studies on the development of health promotion interventions in this professional category.
