Tools for Enhancing the International Exchange of Communication Research

Can tools be developed to enhance the global exchange of research in communications? A model developed by Mansell et al. is used to conceptualize where probable "bottlenecks'' might develop in efforts to network communications research. One likely bottleneck is bibliographical support systems which at present are poorly developed in our field. A new thesaurus structure developed by UNESCO's COMNET might serve as an international standard for indexing communications materials. This could enhance the networking of research at various levels of technical sophistication. Résumé: Est-ce que des outils peuvent être développés pour augmenter les échanges internationaux en recherches communicationnelles? Un modèle développé par Mansell et autres est utilisé pour déterminer où les obstacles pourraient survenir dans la formation de réseaux en recherches communicationnelles. Parmi ces obstacles, il y a les répertoires de références bibliographiques qui sont peu développés dans notre domaine. Un nouveau système en forme de dictionnaire des synonymes développé par le COMNET d'UNESCO pourrait servir de modèle international pour l'indexation de ressources en communications. Cette approche pourrait augmenter les échanges en recherche à plusieurs niveaux de sophistication technique.
