The main goal of this article is to disseminate a work which has almost been forgotten: Visum nach Amerika, by Salamon Dembitzer. A self-fictional narrative guided by a very critical, ironically disillusionistic perspective, interweaving the protagonist's experiences with various reflexive comments, it dismantles – sometimes sarcastically – everything and everyone: the consulates, the Portuguese, the refugees. Nevertheless, going beyond the mere «account of facts» - a definition used by the author himself –, Visum nach Amerika is also a work about the task of literature and the writers.
