Epidural related priapism: A case report and review of the literature

Summary Priapism is an unusual, but potentially organ threatening, complication of epidural anaesthesia. We present a case of priapism following epidural catheterisation for analgesia after a hemicolectomy. The priapism resolved on epidural discontinuation and alternative analgesia was provided. Previous reports have shown that stopping the epidural infusion results in detumescence. The potential severity of this rare complication highlights the importance of prompt recognition and management of such patients.
