Summary We describe use of the Seldinger technique to safely secure the airway of an awake adult patient with partial laryngeal obstruction. A similar technique has previously been described for the placement of tracheal tubes in spontaneously ventilating anaesthetised paediatric patients. However, we believe that this is the first report of successful placement of a subglottic jet‐ventilation catheter in an awake patient.
