JAN SMiT THAT copper is a stimulant of many a physiological function in the life of men and animals is a fact widely known. That it is' also essential to the life of microorganisms is not common knowledge. In fact, though the stimulating action of copper on the growth of Aspergillus niger was known since the beginning of this century (Javillier, 1914), it was Bortels (1927) who for the first time proved, that growth was inhibited, when every trace of copper
