This article presents the main milestones in the professional biography of Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Oleg Nikolayevich Yanitsky — an environmental sociologist, urbanist, researcher of the Russian environmental movement, one of the founders of Russian environmental sociology; the main methods and principles of his work; the ideas on which the concepts he developed are based, in particular, the concept of urbanization as a world-historical process of intensifying communication and integrating various forms of practical life activities, the interdisciplinary concept of a modern big city being a socio-biotechnical system, the concept of a society of universal risk, the concept of the primary eco-structure and individual resource field as a social microstructure, created to give eco-activists enhanced opportunities for social action.
