The discharge characteristic of a novel color plasma display panel with metal barrier plate (SM‐PDP) has been studied by 3D simulation. Compared with the conventional coplanar PDP (ACC PDP), the novel structure has advantages of lower cost, lower ignition voltage, higher response frequency and higher brightness substantially. The luminous effiacy of the SM‐PDP experimental panel with novel structure is about 0.8–0.9lm/W without energy recovery circuit.
