The article is devoted to the little-studied phenomenon of «women’s» prose of the 1850s — the most mature period in the creative evolution of female writers. The authors’ attention is focused on the issue of the emergence of this phenomenon, as well as on the problem of the artistic originality of the works of fictional women. The study attempts to characterize the prose of female authors in the genre aspect. The corpus of the works studied in the article may be of particular scientific interest — many of them have not been reprinted since the publication.
