Editor's Note: Dr. Newton is currently Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School and head of the department's Section of Graduate Education. He holds medical degrees from both the University of Pennsylvania and Cambridge University and has served as Director of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is himself co‐author (with E. E. Philipp and J. Barnes) of a textbook in the field that has gone through three editions (Scientific Foundations of Obstetrics and Gynecology: 1970, 1977, and 1986). His comments were prepared, at my request, as part of an effort to increase dialogue in print between anthropologists and health professionals and particularly to publish health professionals' reactions to our work.
