CONFLICT BETWEEN THE EXCHANGE and use values of land often is argued to be the chief determinant of the social construction of urban space. When exchange value considerations are not an issue, however, conflicts over use values help reveal the importance of social, cultural, and personal dimensions. Conflicts over landscaping and budget planning in a nonprofit Canadian housing cooperative show the interaction of such factors with people's structural positions in the housing market.
