Over the years, Catholic missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea have developed special ways of supporting their mission economically, of forming their own community, and of ministry. Through an examination of three successive periods in mission history, I attempt to understand SVD practice in terms of the tension between local imperatives and metropolitan ideals.
