A quantitative method is briefly described whereby societal density contours may be constructed at successive cross‐sectional levels of the three‐dimensional, branching, socio‐cultural evolution models described in American Anthropologist 1969, 71(5): 864–870. Considered with the branching model, these cross‐sections help to reveal the underlying evolutionary structure, discounting random variations in the sample or excessively complex branchings in large‐sample models.
