The various microextraction techniques havebeen developed in order to reduce sample preparationtime, improve sensitivity and selectivity as well as tocorroborate the recent advances in the development ofhighly sensitive and efficient analytical instrumentation.The current trend is aimed at the simplification andminiaturization of extraction steps, which has led tothe combination of multi-step extraction and analyticalanalysis into single uninterrupted step. The methoddevelopment involves the screening and subsequentoptimization of both gas chromatography-massspectrometry (GC-MS) and solid phase microextraction(SPME) parameters using multivariate experimentaldesign, which has been shown to be efficient and effectivewith little experimental runs.
