Willingness to communicate (WTC) has emerged as a critical construct in second language acquisition (SLA), however, research on WTC in the context of L2 Chinese remains underexplored. This systematic review examines the methodological trends and research foci of WTC in L2 Chinese learning from 2013 to 2023, based on an analysis of 35 studies retrieved from CNKI, Web of Science, and ERIC. The findings reveal that empirical research on WTC in L2 Chinese is predominantly conducted in target language environment, particularly in developed regions of eastern China, and is characterized by strong reliance on mixed-methods approaches. Despite the expansion of WTC research in terms of dimensions and perspectives, several critical limitations persist, including: (1) a geographic and cultural imbalance, with limited representation of non-target language environments and less-developed regions; (2) methodological weakness, such as overly simplified research design and insufficient depth in data analysis; and (3) a lack of exploration into digital contexts and cross-cultural comparisons.
