Throughout the 1970s, American filmmaker and documentarian Frederick\udWiseman (Titicut Follies (1967), Belfast, Maine (1999), National Gallery (2014)\udand more) had a unique carte-blanche: multi-year contracts from the New\udYork flagship public television station, WNET, to make movies more or less at\udhis own pace with budgets of a largesse denied all his peers. He owed this to\udthe patronage of the highly cultured progamme chief at the station, the writer\udand ex-Harper’s editor, Robert Kotlovitz
