The way Malvolio's name in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night relates to the code he gives us, M.DA.I., suggests some kind of correlation or metathesis. The most provocative solution is a recondite French origin, notably by way of Montaigne (but also in terms of Malvenu in Spenser's Faerie Queene).
