Home economics is a subject area with an implied rather than an obvious struc ture. Although professionals are expected to interpret the field to clients in a somewhat uniform manner, considerable diversity exists among professionals applying home economics content. To assist practitioners in interpreting home economics subject‐matter content more accurately, it is helpful to use a concep tual inquiry approach. The approach enables those who study the field to clarify common threads tying subject matter specialties to the basic concept of home economics. By using a structure designed to enhance the coherence of a field of study, researchers may clarify their understanding of the status of home econom ics' body of knowledge and its unique mission.
