This paper describes the appropriate control of experiment‐wise error rates and the researcher's role in making decisions to control for Type 1 errors. Issues re lated to level of significance, one‐ vs. two‐tailed tests and the use of multivariate statistics are included. The concern is voiced that novice researchers often err by not attending to these issues as closely as they should.
