Data on conditions of and satisfaction with housing of the Appalachian coal miner were examined to determine relationships between housing deprivation, housing satisfaction, and various demographic and housing characteristics. A proportionate random sample was selected from rank‐and‐file coal miners em ployed at mines located in McDowell County, West Virginia. A questionnaire was developed, pilot tested, revised and mailed to 687 miner families. A total of 438 usable questionnaires (63%) were returned. Findings revealed the majority of miners in this study were not housing deprived; however, they lacked some amenities enjoyed by workers of similar incomes in other geographic locations. Miners were generally satisfied with their housing and exhibited more satisfaction with housing variables than with community variables. Housing deprivation was significantly correlated with housing satisfaction: as housing conditions improved so did housing satisfaction.
